Western media is finally in its Desi girl era. And thanks to all these different depictions of South Asian girls, there’s less pressure to make one portrayal stand-in for a massive group of people.

All have South Asian girls as lead characters, and all are dynamic and nuanced in their own way, written with fully formed character arcs that toss away the one-dimensional stereotypes of the past. Marvel are spoiling us with choice - for now, at least, and hopefully forever. Never Have I Ever, Bridgerton, The Sex Lives of College Girls, The Wilds, and Marvel's limited series Ms. Now, representation for brown girls is much easier to find in mainstream movies and TV shows than when Bend It Like Beckham came out, the result of decades of work from brown creatives.
